Senza barriera - Latvian composers at the Warsaw Autumn Festival

This CD was produced as part of the International Association of Music Information Centres’s (IAMIC) Office Exchange Program, which took place in the winter of 2008, thanks to the financial support of the European Union’s Culture Programme.

In 2008 six organizations took part in the Office Exchange Program - the American Music Centre, the Canadian Music Centre, the Flanders Music Centre, the Latvian Music Information Centre, the Polish Music Information Centre, and the Portuguese Music Information Centre. The Polish Music Information Centre participated in the Program in both the recommended ways, by sending a member of its staff abroad and hosting a foreign guest in Poland. In November, a PMIC representative stayed at the American Music Center in New York, while in December the PMIC headquarters in Warsaw were visited by Inara Jakubone, director of the Latvian Music Information Centre in Riga.

The main purpose of her visit to Poland was research into the presence of Latvian music at the Warsaw Autumn festival since its inception in 1956. The main part of her research was conducted in the PMIC library and archive.

The Exchange Programme was also an opportunity to learn the organizational principles of the Polish MIC, their strategies and ways of co-operation with other Polish institutions, as well as opportunities for extending international cooperation networks. Our guest familiarised herself with these issues during her work in PMIC as well as visits to selected music institutions (such as the Music Collection Room of the University Library, the “Ruch Muzyczny” Editors’ Office, the Music Collection and the Audio- and Audiovisual Collection of the National Library) and meetings with their staff. Our guest also attended concerts in Warsaw’s major concert halls and opera houses: The Grand Theatre - National Opera, Warsaw Philharmonic, Polish Radio Witold Lutos?awski Concert Studio, the Royal Castle, and the Frederic Chopin University of Music Concert Hall.

This highly successful visit produced results in the form of Inara’s article about the Warsaw Autumn in the Latvian music periodical “Muzikas saule” and the present CD release. The programme for this CD was designed by Inara herself when during her visit to Warsaw she had the opportunity to listen to archive recordings held in PMIC. The CD was further edited after her visit, so that the final result reflects the efforts of both centres and their excellent cooperation triggered by the IAMIC Office Exchange Program.

The CD contains the following compositions: Peteris Vasks (b. 1946) - Musica adventus (1995-1996), Andris Dzenitis (b. 1978) - Senza barriera (1997), Peteris Vasks (b. 1946) - Latvija (1987), Janis Ivanovs (1906-1983) - Symphony No. 14 ‘Sinfonia da camera’ (1971). It is of promotional character only and will not be sold. It may be obtained free of harge for educational, scientific and information purposes from Polish Music Information Centre (contact person: Izabela Zymer, e-mail zymer@polmic.pl).
