Radio Student Celebrates 40th Anniversary
First autonomous student radio in Europe - Radio Student, the broadcaster who from its very beginnings has been a force for expanding the boundaries of the typical media space, advocating freedom and opportunity for all those artists ignored by the mainstream media, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In honour of the milestone, the station’s operators have come up with a slew of events, including an exhibition, lecture and a concert titled ‘Its Name is Freedom’. The concert took place May 9 on Prešeren Square in the centre of Ljubljana and was attended by a large and generationally diverse public. The event offered performances by groups and artists connected with the station’s historical past as well as its present.
Radio Student was established as a direct response to the student demonstrations of 1968, and maintained its critical stance towards society throughout its history. The radio station is also important for its musical viewpoint since all styles of music found a place on its playlist, although its focus was always on creativity. In every period of its operation — during the time of Yugoslavia as well as today — the station represented a window onto musical worlds, discovering modern musical talent irrespective of their geographical or categorical co-ordinates. Although Radio Student eventually became a veritable institution for alternative voices, unfortunately even today its transmitting frequency is limited to Ljubljana and its immediate surroundings. Anyway, you can hear it on-line at www.radiostudent.si.
