Slovakia: May 2006 Report
2006 Year of Slovak Music
On a proposal of the Music Centre Slovakia, the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic announced 2006 to be a Year of Slovak Music. On this occasion and to pay tribute to some of the major personalities of Slovak musical culture on their anniversaries — Alexander Moyzes, Ludovít Rajter and Ján Levoslav Bella — Music Centre Slovakia is planning the following events:
- 1st Alexander Moyzes International Competition for Composers
- Ludovít Rajter Award
- concerts and music events all around Slovakia
- presentations of Slovak music abroad
- releases of books
- CD recordings of Slovak music
Besides its own projects, Music Centre Slovakia assumes a coordinating role with regard to concerts and events organised by other cultural institutions in Slovakia and all over the world. The cultural institutions are invited to take part in the 2006 Year of Slovak Music and to organise events with the signature logo of the Year of Slovak Music. The aim of this activity is to promote Slovak music by organising concerts of the best works of Slovak composers performed by our best concert musicians.
1st Alexander Moyzes International Competition for Composers
The Music Centre Slovakia announces the 1st Alexander Moyzes International Competition for Composers held in the framework of the 2006 Year of Slovak Music. The competition seeks to promote young composers of the EU and at the same time to create an opportunity for international artistic exchange. Hitherto, such a platform has been absent in Slovakia, and the 2006 Year of Slovak Music provides a suitable framework for creating a tradition of a prestigious international composition competition.
Competition Conditions
- Composers are invited to submit a composition in the two categories:
- composition for orchestra
- composition for chamber ensemble or cimbalom (solo) with chamber ensemble
- Only a work by a living composer born after 31 August 1966 will be accepted. The composer must also be a citizen of a member country of the European Union (or permanent resident thereof).
- The final deadline for submitting applications is 31 August 2006.
- The works will be examined by an international jury comprising the following individuals: Wolfgang Rihm (Germany) – chairman, Gavin Bryars (Great Britain), Zsolt Nagy (Hungary), Martin Smolka (Czech Republic), Peter Zagar (Slovak Republic).
- Prizes will be awarded to three chosen works in each category as well as to compositions by Slovak composers with the highest ranking in each category.
